Manny Pacquiao is growing more open-minded about accepting additional blood testing as a stipulation for an agreement with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Pacquiao is quoted on his website stating, “I am willing to help the sport for the future of the sport. I do not want to see anyone cheat or cheat this sport. For that reason I am willing to consider taking blood [tests] as close as 14 days prior to the fight, as long as my opponent does the same, and it is not a lot of blood, just enough to test.” So Manny will bend, but only because it is for the good of the sport? LOL. Please. Manny decided blood testing wasn’t an issue the moment Mosley’s crashing right hand buckled Mayweather’s legs and made him look like an Elvis Presley impersonator . . .
I chuckled when I read the Boston Herald report about tension in the Red Sox locker room. According to the Herald more than a few Red Sox veterans are upset with what they perceive is a laissez-faire attitude toward losing being exhibited by some of the team’s newer members. Although I’m sure Boston sports talk-radio stations were overloaded with phone calls from Red Sox Nation in anguish over the revelation, the rest of the baseball world knew that these “problems” would not signal the beginning of the end for the Fenway Boys. Sure enough last night the Red Sox annihilated the Angels 17-8 . . .
That was an impressive three-game sweep of the Red Sox by the Orioles, but yesterday it was time to return to reality. Yankees starter C.C. Sabathia surrendered only one run in eight innings to lead NY to a 4-1 victory . . . The latest Yankee to get bit by the injury bug is C Jorge Posada, who strained his right calf during today’s game . . . Manager Joe Girardi announced that “The Yankee starter whose name is not to be spoken” will skip his next spot in the rotation. Can we skip his next 25 starts? . . .
For those of us who crash on our couches and act as if our head is going to explode when we have a sinus infection, I offer the name Brett Cecil. Cecil is the Toronto Blue Jays pitcher who ignored his sinus infection yesterday and pitched a perfect-game for seven innings while leading the Jays to a 5-1 victory over the Indians . . . Embarrassing, huh? . . .
Dave Roberts is a name that will forever be etched in my memory. He is the man single-handedly responsible for the Yankees 2004 all-time choke. Up 3-0 in games and ahead 4-3 in the ninth inning with Mariano Rivera on the mound, the Yankees appeared a lock to return to the World Series. Instead, Rivera walked Kevin Millar, and Red Sox manager Terry Francona sent Roberts in to pinch-run. Roberts stole second base and then scored to tie the game. Boston later won the game in extra innings, and then won the next three games to accomplish the greatest comeback in sports history . . . I relive this horrible memory because Roberts has announced that he is battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma. We wish Roberts our best, and if there is anyone who can outrun this disease and leave it in the dust, it’s the former Boston speedster . . .
The Mets lost their second straight game despite a strong pitching performance from Oliver Perez, who pitched six innings and only surrendered two runs . . . Interesting stat provided by the Associated Press: ” Four of the Mets’ eight starting position players were batting .257 or less heading into the game” . . .
The Cardinals pitching staff continues to impress. Last night Jaime Garcia shut down the Philadelphia Phillies, allowing only one run in six innings of work to lead the Cards to a 6-3 victory . . St. Louis’ staff ERA is an incredible 2.56 . . .
